Knightshayes Court (NT)
Garden Category: South West England Gardens
-
The garden is one of the finest in Devon and its collection represents one of the most varied in the Trust; with over 1200 plant species unique to Knightshayes and riotous seasonal colour, it’s always worth a visit. Covering an area of just over four acres, the walled kitchen garden is another great highlight, brimming with seasonal produce for the Stables Caf_. The garden developed by Sir John and Lady Heathcoat Amory since 1945, it is arguably the finest in Devon, amounting to 20 hectares added to the original 1 hectare of Victorian formality. Topiary and yew hedges lead down to a lily-pond; there are exceptional trees (including a stand of Douglas fir a century old) rare plants, shrubs and bulbs and an early example of ‘A garden in the Wood’.
