Essential British Gardens, UK & Republic of Ireland Gardens & Arboretums
Map You can choose a region by clicking on the map or one of the links below. Alternatively, use our Search Engine for any keyword or to find a particular garden by name. See the Notes page for garden abbreviations, navigational comments and the criteria for including a garden not currently in the garden digest.

Essential British Gardens is a digest of some of the finest gardens and arboretums throughout Britain and is based on the original author's experiences and those of other keen gardening friends. We are most grateful to them and all those readers of the uk.rec.gardening newsgroup who have helped with the compilation of this assemblage of gardens scattered throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Inevitably, it is a subjective assembly and not comprehensive. Details of many other gardens can also be found by using the search facilities at About Britain and also Sisley Tours web sites.

Many of the links to gardens in the following pages are to sites managed by The National Trust (NT), The National Trust for Scotland (NTS), Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and English Heritage (EH). The UK Database of Historic Parks and Gardens (UKPG - Online version) also has a wealth of information about many hundreds of gardens. If you want to supplement information found at this web site please follow up by visiting the database.

If there is a garden not listed, or additional details of a garden already listed, that you think should be included in this digest of gardens and arboretums please Gardens need not be large but should be 'memorable', 'outstanding' or of 'significant importance'. If a garden does not have web site, a brief description would be appreciated. Some plant nurseries have also been included where they have interesting, specialised or spectacular gardens open for viewing - usually free!

Further information for Overseas Visitors, in particular details about the 'Yellow Books', are given on the Notes page.
